THE Royal College of Nursing in Wales has welcomed the Welsh Assembly Government’s plans to improve school nurse services in Wales.

It comes as Edwina Hart, Minister for Health and Social Services opens the official consultation on plans to raise the number of school nurses to a minimum of one family nurse per secondary school by the end of the current Assembly term in 2011.

RCN Wales has campaigned for a rise in the number of school nurses as part of its Get it Right campaign which aims to provide ‘nursing focused solutions’ to Wales’ health challenges.

Richard Jones, Deputy Director of RCN Wales, said: “It is clear that school nurses can play a valuable role in addressing a number of health challenges faced by young people.

“They can help address issues such as obesity, substance misuse, the effects of chronic conditions such puma shoes as asthma and childhood diabetes as well as support in the emotional and social development of young people alongside the teaching staff.

“However, the consultation must lead to robust policy that increases the number of school nurses.”
