Meltdown’s lasting cultural impact tough to gauge

September 29th, 2009

The economy is really bad, Jay Leno told his “Tonight Show” audience in March.

How bad?

“So bad that on ‘Sesame Street,’ they won’t even talk about the letters A, I or G anymore.”

Not that Leno was content to leave it at that. In fact, in eight months starting on Labor Day 2008, the comedian told no fewer than 863 jokes about the financial meltdown in his “Tonight Show” monologues, according to a Washington group that monitors such things.

Disgraced former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori pleaded guilty to charges of illegal wiretapping and embezzling government money to bribe politicians and journalists to support his 2000 re-election campaign, the official Andina news agency reported.

Monday’s criminal trial was the fourth and final that Fujimori faced since being extradited to Peru from Chile in 2007.

Proposed drinking regulations for sailors make waves

September 29th, 2009

Drinking alcohol out on the seas has long been a tradition among mariners.

Now a legal proposal for recreational boaters in England threatens to end that laissez-faire life on the water, with new regulations that include breathalyzers and alcohol policies similar to the ones faced by drivers on the road.

While a broad consensus exists that drunken boat driving should be banned, the details of the new law have stirred a political controversy with some accusing the government of overreach and incompetence.

Recession delivers a double blow to many charities

September 29th, 2009

For many social-service charities across America, the recession has delivered a staggering one-two punch. Sharp drops in donations and investment income have been coupled by soaring demand for their services.

The casualties so far include countless needy clients losing assistance and thousands of nonprofit workers who’ve been laid off. Some local charities have shut down; even many of the largest nationwide operations have made painful cutbacks in staff, spending and programs.

UGG An Encyclopedia Fashion

September 28th, 2009

Designers draw people’s eyes by their clear thought and consideration, which is really worth appreciating. However, none of us can explain fashion exactly. Words can not describe the taste of an orange, for the same reason that we will not know the flavor of fashion unless we taste it by ourselves. As more and more designers break into the realm of fashion, the real contender such as Fsashion Ugg Boots stands apart from the wannabes. Owning a history of more than hundreds of years, it stands steadfastly in fashion world. Anyway, UGG is right to be regarded as an encyclopedia in fashion world whose developing process is a classical example for most of the brands. Originally coming from large prairie of Australia, main material on UGG was first used by sheep shearers who had access to the best parts of sheepskin. A long journey passed before UGG Classic Short Boots really strutted down in fashion world and a drastic competition among numerous distributors happened in order to be authorized to use this logo. As a brand reigning supreme in fashion world, UGG is hit by light perfectly and continues to catch not only my eye buy the eyes of almost every other person. Proportion of them is petite enough to be worn to be a fancy dinner or a cocktail party. Whether monochromatic or multicolored designs are dark enough to not look cheap and to go with basically everything you own, no matter what. It is more respectful to the animal to make a pair of boots that really highlights the natural beauty of the skins that are used. UGG boots interprets fashion uniquely. It experienced a journey like many other excellent brands which functions like an encyclopedia really.

pros and cons

September 28th, 2009

When I interviewed Squarespace CEO Dane Atkinson, I asked why Squarespace chose to adopt a free trial model and not a freemium model.

Although the freemium model, in which a company mixes free services with paid upgrades, is increasingly popular because of the economy, for some online businesses, free trials are well worth a look and could even be a better fit.

When considering both models, here are some pros and cons to keep in mind.

Posterous co-founder Sachin Agarwal

September 28th, 2009

I interviewed Sachin recently to find out about progress, plans and Pro accounts (which are coming later this year).

Making it (ridiculously) easy to post content online is at the very heart of Posterous. It really couldn’t be any more straightforward. Was this a starting point for you when you first thought of what Posterous could be, and what did you seek to accomplish?

Posterous is the easiest way to post everything online. You simply send an email to post@posterous.com. You can attach images, video, audio, documents, anything at all. We’ll convert everything to the most web friendly format and publish it online, for free. It’s dead simple, yet powerful. You don’t even need an account to use Posterous. We want to let people focus on the content, instead of dealing with setting up websites.

This has been the goal of Posterous since day one. Instead of building hard-to-use web publishing tools we wanted to create something that is a joy to use. The first generation of web publishing tools were designed for long text posts, and don’t handle rich media well. We wanted to focus on rich media like images and video. Email seemed like the way to go since it handles all attachments well, and so many people use email constantly, everyday.

Then when the iPhone came out, it was a no brainer. We all want to post from our mobile devices, and email is the most universal way to do this. There’s no need to write apps for every device out there, email is already built into all the devices and software we use. By integrating into the tools people already use (email) and making posting dead simple and automatic, we will make Posterous the way to publish everything online.

Bec Clarke on selling luxury goods online

September 28th, 2009

AstleyClarke.com, an online retailer of exclusive jewellery, launched its redesigned website this week, as well as a revamped showroom in London.

The company has been trading for three years, and received £2.75m of investment from Index Ventures in 2008.

I’ve been talking to Founder and MD Bec Clarke about the company, the thinking behind the new website, and the challenges of selling luxury goods online…

When did you launch AstleyClarke?

We’ve been trading now for almost three years. I think that there is a new luxury consumer out there who is very much an online shopper, this applies to both men and women. They are looking for unique and exclusive products online and sites like ours are appealing to these consumers.

We source jewellery from all around the world, and everything on the site is exclusive to us. We have built up a loyal following of customers.

What was the thinking behind the site relaunch?

We raised £2.75m in funding last year from Index Ventures and have used this investment to set about professionalising the website and honing our proposition.

There were certain elements that we needed to upgrade to meet the requirements of our customers, which is the reason for the relaunched site. They are looking for inspirational content, as well as better product photos and features.

Brands under attack

September 28th, 2009

Internet users have started to use Google’s new Sidewiki feature to abuse brands on their own websites:

Microsoft is described as “useless” and “crap” on Microsoft.com
Apple is slammed at apple.com for lying and shipping products with “severe bugs”
The Daily Mail’s home page is labelled as “sad toss”
Google’s sidewiki is a new feature of its toolbar that lets you “publish helpful information about any web page right in your browser”. Once someone has written an entry about a page, other users can “read insights in context from Sidewiki entries added by others”.

Sidewiki: a way to graffiti websites?

The functionality is fairly simple – if you have the Google toolbar, you can slide the Sidewiki panel open and closed, and then see (or add to) what has been written about the individual page you’re looking at.

My first thought about this was that brands are going to have kittens, it’s the equivalent of allowing people to graffiti their sites. That was also my second, third and fourth thought. And having had a look at a couple of high-profile sites, I imagine it will go on being my fifth and sixth thought.
