like an intercourse

September 2nd, 2010

Also, though I was at times entirely capable of enjoying sexual sadism, I was not just then in a frame of mind to like an intercourse that would be pure torture for Rennie; nevertheless, as I mentioned earlier, her suffering exerted a powerful physical attraction on me. My guilt feelings, incidentally, although I’d still have agreed to their propriety, had got lost in the melodrama of Joe’s new step. I was too entirely astonished and intrigued by his action to devote much attention to feeling guilty.

“I’m not taking a stand,” I declared. “I’m an issue evader from way back. I’ll go along with you any way you want.”

“I can’t do it!” Rennie wailed.

“Let’s go home, then.”

“Ican’t! Please, please, either throw me out or rape me, Jake! I can’t do anything!”

“I’m not going to make up your mind,” I said.

This too, I suppose, was sadistic, but it was pretty much honest; I really couldn’t have done very wholeheartedly either of the things she requested, and it is easier to sit still halfheartedly than to do dramatic things halfheartedly. Rennie sobbed for a full two minutes, huddled in her chair: this affair was indeed tearing her up.

Ah me, and there were so many other ways it could have been handled. Perhaps, I reflected, what would eventually destroy both Morgans, after all, was lack of imagination. I glanced up at Laocoön: his agony was abstract and unsuggestive.

unnoticed by Burton

September 2nd, 2010

Once established, the formula becomes increasingly perfunctory in all the manuscript versions (in many translations it is dropped altogether, as is even the numbering of the nights): Only occasionally now will Dunyazade’s praise be repeated, Scheherazade’s deprecation of her oeuvre to date, the king’s silent vow, the mutual embrace, the king’s going forth, the vizier’s approach with shroud, the king’s return at evening, the sex, the sleep, the request. There is however one startling anomaly, unnoticed by Burton: About five months along, on Night 145, Scheherazade winds up The Tale of King Omar bin al-Nu’uman and His Sons, the longest story in the Nights (it has taken her exactly 100 nights to tell it) — and, mirabile dictu, she does not begin a new one! Instead, the king says to her, in Burton’s English, “I desire that thou tell me somewhat about birds,” and having so said, promptly falls asleep. Instead of applauding the long tale just done, little Dunyazade declares to her sister that she’s never seen the man cheerful before this night; she even dares to hope, aloud, that his good humor bodes well for the outcome between them. It is a deviation from the formula without precedent or succedent, until the last night of all, which however it certainly foreshadows, from an extraordinarily long remove. On Night 146, Scheherazade comes up with the requested bird-story (which happens to be the oldest story in the Nights), and the abbreviated formula is resumed.

Tribute to the White Poplar

August 25th, 2010

The white poplar is no ordinary tree. Let me sing its praises.

When you travel by car through Northwest China’s boundless plateau, all you see before you is something like a huge yellow-and-green felt blanket. Yellow is the soil — the uncultivated virgin soil. It is the outer covering of the loess plateau accumulated by Mother Nature several hundred thousand years ago. Green are the wheat fields signifying man’s triumph over nature. They become a sea of rolling green waves whenever there is a soft breeze. One is here reminded of the Chinese expression mai lang meaning “rippling wheat” and cannot help admiring our forefathers’ ingenuity in coining such a happy phrase. It must have teen either the brainwave of’ a 4ever scholar, or a linguistic gem sanctioned by long usage. The bound-less highland with dominant yellow and green, is flat like a whetstone. Were it not for the distant mountain peaks standing side by side, (which, as your naked eyes tell you, are below where you stand), you would probably forget that you are on the highland. The sight of the scene will probably call up inside you a string of epithets like “spectacular” or “grand”. Meanwhile, however, your eyes may become weary of watching the same panorama, so much so that you are oblivious of its being spectacular or grand. And you may feel monotony coming on. Yes, it is somewhat monotonous, isn’t it?

Pretty Woman tops favourite Valentine’s Day movies list

August 9th, 2010

LONDON – Pretty Woman, the 1990 romance starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, has landed the top spot in a list of favourite Valentine’s Day movies.

Picked up by over 3,500 men and women in the UK, the film pipped other flicks like Four Weddings And A Funeral, Sleepless In Seattle and Notting Hill in the Radio Times poll.

Film critic Barry Norman said: “What develops here is a modern-day fairy tale, a cross between Pygmalion and Cinderella for a raunchier age, an endearing love story in which masculine and feminine wish fulfilment are made celluloid.”

Four Weddings And A Funeral, with Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell, took second place for both genders, reports The Mirror.

Other films in the list were When Harry Met Sally, Some Like It Hot and Amelie. (ANI)

How High are the Stakes?

June 12th, 2010

If you are a fan of Madonna, you may agree with me that her album 鈥淐onfessions on a Dance Floor鈥?contains some of the most metaphysical messages that you can find in music. If you are not very familiar with her music on this album, I can advise you to listen to her songs because they are truly motivational. I want to devote this article to one song in particular: How High.
鈥淗ow high are the stakes?
How much fortune can you make?
Does this get any better?
Should I carry on?
Will it matter when I’m gone?
Will any of this matter?鈥?br />
1.How high are the stakes in your life?
It is Sunday night. You have a 9 to 5 job in the office that you know is really a 7 to 7. Tomorrow is Monday and you are preparing yourself for a 60 hour job, not counting the commuting time if you live in a big city like London or NYC. You may love your job, or you may not. If the later is true for you, I know that the perspective of Monday approaching is cramping your guts. You wish you鈥檇 win the lotto so tomorrow you don鈥檛 have to put yourself through that feeling again. Something within you tells you that this job, this part of your life, is making you miserable. You dream of that house with a pool and a huge yard, and you stick to the job because common sense tells you that if you work hard, you will be able to afford it one day. But you know, you really know, that the 7 to 7 job is not going to cut it. The hero in you takes over and asks you point blank: How high are the stakes?

2.How much fortune can you make?
So now the hero in you has taken over. The next question is how much fortune can you make? Fortune can mean whatever is important to you: happiness, cash, time, power, influence鈥?it is your personal meaning of fortune. You have spent many years blaming your job for your lack of fortune. You work so hard that you come home really tired only to turn on your computer to keep up with your unanswered emails, you are not happy. You earn so little money for all the effort that you put into your job that you don鈥檛 have enough cash to do all the things that you want to do. You are so busy with your 60 hour job that extends into weekends and holidays that time for you is more valuable than any platinum and diamonds. You have a horrible boss that apparently thinks you are invisible because you really, your power of decision and your real influence in the outcome is very limited. The creative side of your brain is starting to take over, and you start asking yourself: if only I was brave enough to listen to the hero within, how much fortune can I make if I were to choose something better for myself.

3.Does this get any better?
Of course you have a right side of the brain, so it does not matter what the hero within tells you or the left side of the brain advises you, you start thinking if it is really worth it. Will it get any better? Perhaps you leave your job, by choice, only to find yourself without your safety cushion. The salary is gone, the pension money is not growing any longer plus you know that the investment ahead is so big, that it will take time to break even if Air Jordan 2010 you manage to break even. It is really scary. You know if you make it, it will be a lot better. You will start living life under your own terms, pretty much your way. You start relating to Sinatra鈥檚 song 鈥淢y Way鈥? You play it for inspiration. You know, you really know it is going to get better. Fear, however, will tell you only that the odds are against you. Fear will show you only the obstacles, not the possibilities. You look for a simple answer to your question: does this get any better?

4.Should I carry on?
As you debate with yourself about the possibilities, you think about that special person in your life that makes it all worth it; a child, a spouse, a sibling, a parent, a friend. You start asking yourself whether carrying on with this heroic plan is going to be the path to your fortune. You ask yourself whether you should carry on or stay where you are. You have a moment of honesty when your guts are suddenly not cramped any longer. You think about the available time that you will now be able to spend with your child, you think about your spouse who puts up with you every day of your life when you come home grumpy after work, you think about those friends that you haven鈥檛 hanged out with for a while, you think about who you care for the most, and as you start considering the possibility of carrying on, your guts are not cramped any longer. You feel good, you are relaxed, you have now felt in your body what it is boiling in your imagination. You like the feeling but it seems you are still scared.

5.Will it matter when I鈥檓 gone?
We all die. I believe our soul doesn鈥檛 die, but I believe that I don鈥檛 want to die without leaving a legacy. You go through the entire process once again, and you wonder if the 7 to 7 job is leaving a legacy. If you love your job, surely something that you do is fulfilling your life鈥檚 purpose, and, even if you don鈥檛 know it, you are leaving something greater than you for humanity. If you hate it, however, chances are you are not where you are meant to be. You were born with something unique to give, and you don鈥檛 want to be gone without having used your special gift. Will it matter when I鈥檓 gone?, perhaps it is time to give it a try.

6.Will any of this matter?
It is not even Monday yet, and you are ready to give it a try. The stakes are high, there is a huge fortune to make, it will get much better and because of that you are ready to carry on. You know that when you are gone, what you did will still matter because you will make a difference. So yes, all of this matters. You have nothing to lose and everything to win.

It is Monday morning, you are happy and relaxed. It may be or not a busy week ahead. You, however, feel that this is the life you crafted for yourself. You are adding the colours and the textures that you want for your life. No one else is painting on the canvas of your existence. You are the master and you are the painting. Yes, the stakes were high.

Drunk American Airlines passenger grabs flight attendant’s butt…in front of wife

June 12th, 2010

Can somebody out there please tell me what is with these people going timberland mens boots crazy on flights?

The Associated Press reported another incident yesterday involving a passenger who got a little too hopped up on booze and proceded to grab a flight attendant’s buttocks after throwing a bunch of ice at his timberland boots cheap fellow travelers.

The passenger’s name is Jacob Kline, and he was traveling on an American Airlines flight timberland boot from Dallas to Charlotte on Tuesday. Kline started drinking rum and cokes and quickly became disruptive. (After three. Kind of a light weight, huh?)

After flight attendants refused to top him up for a fourth time, Kline allegedly took his cup of ice and started throwing cubes around the cabin. He then got up, started swearing and tussled with a flight attendant until someone the AP describes as “very large in size” subdued him.

And get this: Kline was traveling with his wife and two children.

The pilot reportedly requested a rapid descent landing. Kline was arrested and charged with being intoxicated and a whole host of other things.

This happened about a week after a JetBlue passenger punched a flight attendant after she lit up a cigarette during a flight.

This latest incident will no doubt bolster the zany idea timberland boots uk of a Denver group that is trying to petition the nation’s airports to install special smoking sections for marijuana enthusiasts, thinking that if you allow passengers to get high there will be less of a chance that they will become disruptive on a flight.

Grant reported that story on Wednesday.

Austin Architect AD Stenger

June 12th, 2010

Arthur Dallas Stenger first began building homes in the 1940s in Austin, mostly on Arthur Lane in the Barton Hills area, which was named after his father (the first Arthur Dallas Stenger), who was also an architect. Though Stenger attended architecture school at the University of Texas after returning home from World War II, he never graduated. He did get his architecture license as an undergraduate, and began building homes for post war Austinites.

Though FHA loans had design restrictions built into them, it didn’t stop Stenger from creating unique homes that were moderately priced, even if he had to help the homeowners find loans. He also worked differently from other builders, by purchasing land (mostly in the Barton Hills and Pemberton Heights areas), finding a buyer, and building a home without making his clients sign contracts. There was no pressure for the buyer to take the house upon completion, though clients rarely backed out after seeing the home.

A Stenger home will stand out, with signature low peaked roofs, clad with concrete, wood rock and other organic materials. He also used rock and stone quarried from the home site as siding or built into the fireplace, helping the house fit easily within its surroundings. Stenger had a love for long, low slung fireplaces reminiscent of 50s lounges, so every home he built included a wood burning fireplace, though not particularly necessary in the heart of Texas.

The houses also have many of the amenities that Austin’s big modern building boom now cherish, with walls of windows and clerestory windows hanging just below the exposed roofline, and tinted concrete floors, now pricing out nike air max around 10 dollars a square foot. He also used the organic building theory of “bringing the outside in,” by running exterior stonework through the house and into its interior.

Though Barton Hills was featured as “the world’s largest air-conditioned subdivision” in the 1956 Parade of Homes, Stenger didn’t build his homes with central air. Instead, he built large windows to catch morning light, and not the hot sun light of mid afternoon, and a floor plan to allow for a breezy pass through ventilation when the windows were opened.

In 1957, when Stenger’s friend, radio host John Henry Faulk, ended up blacklisted as a communist in the McCarthy era, he built and financed a home for him, knowing his friend was swamped with legal fees. He took his other clients financial situations into account as well, helping offset furniture costs with several built ins, and pricing his houses between $18,000 and $22,000, though today they can range from $400,000 to $600,000.

Stenger built around 100 unique homes cheap air max in the Austin area, building his last for his wife Jean in 1999, a few years before he died in 2002 at the age of 82. Today’s battle lies between those seeking out Stenger houses for their originality and great air max 180 use of space, and others who prefer to tear down these houses to build larger homes, since the locations are highly sought after air max 2010 for their land alone.
